Why does nobody talk about how much QuickBooks Self-Employed actually costs per year?

I signed up for QuickBooks Self-Employed back in January thinking it was like $15 a month no big deal. But after 8 months I realized I hadnt checked my actual charges because I was busy with client work. Turns out they bumped me to a higher tier automatically and I was paying $25 a month for features I never used like mileage tracking I dont even drive for work. So thats like $200 down the drain for stuff I coulda done on a spreadsheet for free. Now I switched to a free tracker app called Wave and its got all the basics for quarterly estimates. Anyone else get caught by those auto upgrades or found a cheaper way to handle expenses without bleeding cash every month?

Wait, does Wave actually handle quarterly estimates the same way QuickBooks does? I thought Wave's self-employed version was more for invoicing and basic tracking, not for calculating estimated tax payments. Might be worth double checking that before you fully commit.

I see your point about the auto-upgrades being sneaky, but I actually think $25 a month is pretty reasonable if you're using it for legit business stuff (like if you have actual mileage to track). A spreadsheet works fine for basic stuff, but the IRS audit protection and automatic category sorting saved me way more than $200 in time last year.
