I used to spend 30 minutes trimming my bonsai tree like a perfectionist

Now I just hack off the dead branches and shape it in 10 minutes. Last week I cut too much off the top and it actually looks better than before, so I got curious if anyone else stopped overthinking their hobby and saw better results.

Right, the "hack off the dead branches and shape it in 10 minutes" part really hit home. I used to have this whole ritual where I'd measure twice, cut once, and stress over every little leaf. Last month I tried your approach on my juniper and accidentally took way more off the top than I meant to. But you know what? The tree has this cool, windswept look now that it never had before. It made me realize that sometimes our fear of messing up holds us back from something better. So yeah, your mileage may vary, but I'm on board with the quick-and-dirty method now.

I used to be the exact same way, @quinn341. I'd literally pull out a ruler and a level for my little bonsai like I was building a deck or something lmao. But last year I had a similar moment where I just went at a juniper with some clippers, no finesse at all, and ended up with this weird asymmetrical shape that actually looks way more natural than the perfect ones I was going for. It sounds dumb but it really changed how I think about pruning. All that careful planning was just me being scared to mess up, and now I honestly prefer the chaos a little bit. The "dead branches and 10 minutes" method just feels more alive and less like a museum piece.

My buddy did the same thing with his juniper and now it looks like a tiny windblown pine.
