Tried bidding per project vs per hour on Upwork last month, total game changer

I did a test with 5 similar writing gigs on Upwork. Bid hourly on 3 of them, flat project rate on 2. The flat rate ones landed me $850 total for about 14 hours of work. The hourly ones got me $620 for 16 hours. Has anyone else found flat rates just work better for certain niches?

What kind of writing gigs were those two flat rate ones?

Were they the ones paying like $50 for a 2000-word article on something super specific? I did a few of those back in the day and it was brutal.

Nah I gotta push back on this. Hourly protects you from scope creep way better. One flat rate job I did turned into "oh can you just add a few more sections" and suddenly I'm working double the hours for the same money. You got lucky with those two but one bad client and you're eating the loss.
