Old way: tracking every coffee receipt vs. new way: just taking the standard deduction
For years I saved every single coffee shop receipt for my home office hangouts. I added them up at tax time and it was maybe $80 a year. Last year I switched to just taking the standard deduction for my home office instead. I realized the time spent sorting and scanning those little papers wasn't worth the $12 I saved. Has anyone else found that itemizing tiny expenses is more hassle than it's worth?

Wait, have you actually tried tracking just the home office deduction separately from the coffee receipts? I did the same thing for years and finally realized I was basically working for free on that admin time. The standard deduction is way simpler and honestly unless you have a ton of expenses the math usually doesn't work out anyway. I just take a photo of my big receipts now and toss the rest. Saves me like an hour each year and the aggravation isn't worth the pennies.

Nah, the standard deduction is for regular folks who don't itemize. If you're self-employed or have a home office, you're looking at the home office deduction which is separate. That one can actually save you real money if you use the space exclusively for work. But I feel you on the coffee receipts, that's just nickels and dimes. I stopped bothering with those too. The real money is in bigger stuff like equipment or vehicle expenses, not tracking every cup of joe.

Hate to say it but I've been there too. Spent a whole afternoon sorting coffee receipts once just to save like ten bucks, felt like such a waste. It's one of those things that feels productive but really just burns your time for almost nothing.
