That $75 'Tax Strategy Call' that nearly got me audited

A buddy from my coworking space told me to use his tax guy, who charged me $75 for a 15-minute call. He said I could write off my entire home internet bill since I work from my apartment in Austin. If I hadn't double-checked with a proper CPA, I would have claimed way more than the actual business use percentage, like maybe 30 percent not 100. Anyone else had someone give them tax advice that sounded good but was totally wrong?

The 100% internet write-off advice was a HUGE red flag right there.

Dude that line made me laugh out loud when I read it. You know a "guru" is full of it when they tell you to write off 100% of your home internet. I had a buddy who tried that years ago and got flagged by the IRS so fast his head spun. They made him prove every single hour of usage and he ended up having to pay back a ton plus penalties. It's wild how these people throw out advice that could screw you over without any warning.

Brian over there nailed it with those red flags. @brian_hart is right that the IRS does not mess around with home office claims. A buddy of mine tried a similar trick and ended up in a payment plan for three years. Good on you for checking with a real CPA before filing.
