My cheap clamp-on desk lamp vs a proper LED panel was no contest after 3 weeks of headaches
The $15 lamp made my eyes water by noon every day but swapping to a $60 adjustable LED panel with daylight bulbs cleared up the strain in about two days, has anyone else found lighting makes that big a difference for zoom calls?

$15 lamp made my eyes water by noon" - wait, that's a real thing that happens?? I always thought people were being dramatic about office lighting giving them headaches but I guess not lol

The flickering thing is definitely real, but it's more about the type of bulb than the price tag. A $15 lamp with a decent LED bulb that has a high CRI and no visible flicker would probably be fine. A $5 bulb from the dollar store that's basically a strobe light in disguise, that's where the headaches come from. Your mileage may vary of course but I'd check the bulb before blaming the lamp.

wait is that actually all it took to fix it? i had basically the same thing happen with one of those cheap clip-on ring lights from amazon. my eyes were killing me by the end of the day and i thought i was just getting old. swapped to a proper LED panel and the difference was night and day, like literally no more squinting after like 2 days. the cheap ones flicker so bad even if you can't see it consciously, your eyes totally know.
