Got tricked by that AI that writes poetry... turned out it was better than me
I was real skeptical about those AI writing tools, thought they were all hype. My buddy Mike from the Denver meetup group dared me to try that Claude thing for a haiku about my missing cat. Honestly, the thing wrote something that made me tear up a bit in my kitchen on Tuesday night. Has anyone else had a moment where an AI tool surprised you like that?

Did you keep the haiku the AI wrote for you?

Got that haiku saved in a folder on my phone actually. Had to scroll back through a bunch of screenshots to find it because it got buried under cat photos, but yeah I kept it. It was just so spot on about my missing cat that I couldn't bring myself to delete it even though it hurt to read. Sometimes you hang onto the painful stuff because it reminds you what you cared about.

Two springs ago I found an old journal entry from 2019 where I tried writing a poem for my grandma's funeral. It was real bad, like cringe level bad. I fed the same details into an AI last month just to see what would happen. The thing wrote a better poem than me, but here's the part nobody talks about - it was missing all the messy human stuff like the spelling mistakes and the crossed out lines and the tear stains on the paper. The AI version was technically better but it felt hollow compared to my garbage poem because my garbage poem had my actual heart in it. Your missing cat haiku probably hit you hard because it captured the feeling right, but you gotta ask yourself if you want perfect poetry or poetry that has your fingerprints all over it.
