Heard a guy at the coffee shop say AI art is just 'fancy theft'

He was going on about how it just steals from real artists, but that's missing the whole point of how the tech actually learns patterns. It's more like studying a million paintings to understand style, not copying them pixel for pixel. Has anyone else had to explain this to someone who just doesn't get it?

Exactly. It's like saying a human artist who studies Van Gogh is stealing from him. The AI looks at shapes, colors, and composition rules. It learns that impressionist brushstrokes go a certain way, not that it should copy Starry Night. I had a similar talk with my neighbor who called it a "copy machine." I told him to imagine learning to write by reading every book in the library. You learn sentence structure, not how to plagiarize Moby Dick word for word.

That "copy machine" line is perfect, I've heard that too. My cousin was convinced AI just stitches together bits of other pictures. I had to explain it's more like how you learn to tile a floor by seeing a hundred patterns, you get the idea of spacing and flow, not how to copy one specific layout.

That "copy machine" line made me rethink it too, actually.
