Just had a talk with a guy at the comic shop that changed how I watch subbed shows

He said I was missing half the emotion because I'm reading instead of listening to the voice acting. Tried rewatching Violet Evergarden with my eyes on the screen instead of subtitles and picked up way more from the vocal delivery alone. Anyone else ever try ditching subs for a rewatch?

Heard a similar thing from a buddy who runs a record store, @the_cameron. He said reading lyrics while listening made him miss how the singer's voice actually cracked or softened. Tried it with some old blues records and yeah, he was right.

Brought a buddy of mine to a subbed anime marathon last year and he kept zoning out. He told me later he couldn't get into any of the shows because he was so focused on reading the words he missed the actual performances. So I threw on an episode of Death Note with the dub just to see what happens. He ended up binge watching the whole series that weekend and now swears by dubs for anything with strong voice work.

Did your buddy try adjusting subtitle speed or font size first?
