My cousin told me to skip the first 20 episodes of One Piece
He said the real story starts after that, but I tried it and felt totally lost on the characters. Has anyone else tried jumping ahead in a long series and regretted it?

Oh man, skipping the start is the worst! I tried that with Attack on Titan and had no idea who anyone was or why anything mattered. @matthew_west is totally right, you need that foundation or the whole thing falls apart.

Skipping the beginning is a bad move... I read a piece where a critic said starting "Game of Thrones" from season three would ruin the whole experience. You'd miss why the families hate each other, and Ned's story sets up everything. It's like building a house but leaving out the foundation. Those early One Piece episodes are where you learn why Luffy wants to be King of the Pirates and who Zoro really is. Without that, they're just random people on a boat.

Totally agree about the foundation thing... I tried watching Breaking Bad from season 2 once because a friend said that's when it gets good. I had no clue why I should care about Walter White or his family. He was just some angry guy in a hat. Felt like I walked into a movie an hour late. You need those early chapters to get why the characters act the way they do later on.
