Warning: That weird fridge noise might be a hidden ice dam

Spent 4 hours on a service call for a fridge making a loud hum. Customer thought it was the compressor, but it was a tiny ice dam behind the freezer panel blocking the drain. Anyone have a go-to method for clearing those without a full defrost?

Last year I had a customer with the same problem, a constant hum that drove them nuts. Dakota_miller93 has the right idea with the turkey baster, that's a solid move. I keep a small funnel and a cup of steaming water in my truck just for those calls. You pour slow and steady right into the drain hole until you hear it give way. The key is using water hot enough to melt the ice but not so hot it cracks the plastic liner.

Disagree on the hot water method. Seen too many cracked drain pans from thermal shock. A hair dryer on low heat is slower but safer.

Grab a turkey baster and some hot water. Fill the baster, aim it right into the drain hole behind the panel, and give it a few good squirts. The heat melts the ice dam fast and the pressure helps push the gunk through. Just have a towel ready to catch the overflow. Works every time without having to empty the whole freezer.
