Comparison: sanding discs vs flap discs on heavy paint buildup

Had to strip a 90s Ford F-150 hood that had like 6 layers of old paint and primer on it. Started with sanding discs on a DA and went through about 8 of them before I gave up. Switched to a 40 grit flap disc on an angle grinder and had the whole hood stripped in 20 minutes. Flap discs do leave deeper scratches but the time saved is worth it if you're planning to prime and block anyway. Anyone else run into a job where sanding discs just could not keep up?

Did you try a wire wheel first to knock the loose flakes off before sanding?

Yeah, I grabbed a wire wheel for my '72 F100 resto and ended up flinging rust flakes all over my face, lol. Total rookie move, @blake_kelly19. It worked okay on the big stuff but I still had to hit it with 80 grit by hand after cause the wheel left these weird grooves. I shoulda just used a scraper first and saved myself the shower full of metal shavings.

Wait, didn't @ivan462 just say the wire wheel left grooves all over his panels?
