Just realized I was wrong about my fire pit choice

I had to pick between a cheap portable metal pit or building a permanent stone one. I went with the portable one to save cash, about $80 from the store. It rusted out after one Ohio winter and looked awful. Now I'm saving up for the stone one I should have built first. Anyone have tips for a simple DIY stone pit that won't break the bank?

My cousin did something similar with a cheap grill. Bought a flimsy one that fell apart after a few months. He ended up building a brick base for his new one with leftover pavers from his patio project. It wasn't a full fire pit, but the idea was the same. He just stacked them in a circle with some construction adhesive. Still holding up fine.

I mean, what kind of stone are you thinking of using?

Wait, it only lasted one Ohio winter? That's actually impressive.
