Vent: My sourdough starter exploded all over the kitchen last night

I keep my starter in a quart mason jar and I guess I fed it too late before bed. Woke up at 2am to a loud pop and found sticky fermented goo dripping down my cabinets. Had to scrub everything before work this morning. Anyone else had a starter go rogue on them and find a better container system?

Honestly, a tight lid with a slight crack works way better than exploding jars.

Three times now I've seen people act like a jar exploding is some huge traumatic event. @sean48, you scrubbed brine off your ceiling? Really? I just opened the window and grabbed a towel. Takes maybe five minutes. You'd think people were defusing a bomb the way they talk about tight lids.

@morganl71 Yeah, a slight crack is the sweet spot for sure. I learned that the hard way last summer when I tried to rush a batch of pickles and forgot to burp the jars. Whole kitchen smelled like vinegar for a week, and I had to scrub brine off the ceiling. My own fault for trying to cut corners, really. Someone with more patience (like you) probably figured that out on the first try. I still have the mental image of that pop and the spray, which is never fun.
