A chat with an old timer about wheel building made me miss the old ways

I was at the shop yesterday and this guy, maybe 70, brought in a 1980s Raleigh with a wobbly rear wheel. He watched me true it on the stand and said, 'You know, we used to build those from scratch in a day, spokes and all, for about $15 labor.' That hit different because now a basic wheel build starts at $80 and feels like a lost art. He said the real skill was feeling the tension in your hands, not just reading a gauge. It got me thinking about how much of the craft has turned into just swapping parts. Has anyone else had a moment that made you feel like a mechanic from another time?

That tension-by-hand thing is a real skill.

Can I just buy the tension?

Hear that all the time from my uncle. He ran a shop in the 80s and still complains about how everything is just a pre-built kit now. Says the real magic was knowing how to lace a wheel so it stayed true for years, not just getting it straight on the stand. Makes me wish I learned that way.
