Just realized I've been forging my leaf springs all wrong for years

Three years ago at a demo in Asheville, a guy told me to always anneal truck springs before working them, but last month I saw a video where the smith just normalized them once. I've been doing the full anneal for so long, but maybe it's overkill and wastes fuel. Which method do you all use for recycling spring steel?

Man, that reminds me of the time I tried to make a knife from an old coil spring. Spent HOURS on the anneal, and the thing STILL cracked on me during the quench. Total waste of a Saturday.

You call it a total waste, but I see it differently. That cracked knife taught you more about heat treating than any perfect blade ever could. A Saturday spent learning what doesn't work is still time well spent in this hobby. The mistakes are where you actually figure things out.

Yeah, @hernandez.gavin, that kind of waste just kills your motivation.
