Dropped $80 on a moisture meter for my indoor plants

Thought I was overwatering my monstera but turns out the soil was bone dry 2 inches down. Has anyone else had a cheap meter totally change how they water their plants?

Man I had the exact same thing happen with my Calathea. Thought I was drowning it because the top looked damp but that meter went straight to dry like a desert. It's wild how misleading the surface can be, especially with chunky potting mixes. Now I just poke the meter in every couple days and actually wait for it to hit the right zone before watering. Saved me from killing a few plants that looked fine but were secretly thirsty.

Same thing happened to me with my pothos lol. I felt so dumb because the top inch was damp and I kept thinking I was giving it too much water. Turns out the bottom was completely dry and the roots were suffocating. That little meter completely changed how I treat my snake plants too - now I know they actually like a deep soak way less often than I thought. It's wild how much more confident I feel about watering now that I'm not just guessing based on the top layer.

My buddy Alex had a fiddle leaf fig that looked totally fine on top but kept dropping leaves for months. He finally borrowed my moisture meter and found out the soil was wet at the bottom even though the top was dry. He switched to a well draining pot mix after that and now the plant is putting out new growth every week lol. It's crazy how much we rely on just looking at the surface when the real story is happening a few inches down.
