I finally called out a friend for calling weeds 'ugly' and it got heated

Was having a beer with my buddy Dave last Saturday. He was ripping out dandelions from his lawn and said they ruin the whole look. I told him dandelions are actually great for bees early in spring. He laughed and said bees don't care about ugly plants. That hit different because he's usually a chill guy. But it got me thinking about the whole debate. Are we too focused on manicured lawns versus letting native plants grow wild? Some people see weeds as pests, others see them as food for pollinators. Which side do you lean on when it comes to yard maintenance?

@the_drew you're reading way too much into it. Dave just thinks dandelions make his yard look like a vacant lot. Some of us want to sit outside without looking at a patch of weeds.

Is it really that deep though? A guy just doesn't want dandelions in his grass, and now we're talking about judging people's whole life approach. Pretty sure Dave's just trying to have a nice-looking yard without getting lectured about it.

It's funny how that "ugly" word gets thrown around at anything that doesn't fit someone's picture of how things should look. I've been noticing this same pattern everywhere, not just with lawns but with people's whole approach to life these days. We get so fixed on this idea of perfect and controlled that we forget how much good comes from the messy, natural stuff that just grows on its own. Maybe the real question isn't about weeds being ugly or not, but about why we feel the need to judge everything that doesn't fit our neat little boxes.
