Caught myself impulse buying $45 worth of fancy pasta sauce at a farmers market last weekend

I was at the downtown Portland farmers market and almost dropped $45 on three jars of small-batch tomato sauce because the vendor was really good at talking. Then I remembered I had a can of crushed tomatoes at home that costs $1.50 and makes the same thing. Has anyone else talked themselves out of a stupid food purchase like that?

Is that place the one where they give you a sample on a saltine cracker? I've been burned by a good spiel and a free taste before.

No worries @wells.evan, that's actually a different place a few blocks down lol. The saltine cracker sample spot closed like two years ago.

Have you tried keeping a running list of things you already have at home for exactly this kind of moment? I literally have a note on my phone called "Pantry Staples" so when I'm about to drop forty bucks on fancy vinegar or something, I check it and remind myself I've got a perfectly good bottle of balsamic from last month. It's not as fun to talk myself out of it in the moment but my wallet thanks me later.
