Visited a new apartment complex in Tempe and saw they ran all the coax through the same chase as the main electrical... is that even up to code?

That's a great way to get some free radio with your cable. What could go wrong?

Actually it's a pretty clever hack if you know what you're doing. People have been using cable lines for AM reception for decades without any issues. The shielding on modern coax is really good, so interference isn't a big problem. It's just using existing infrastructure in a new way, which is smart. As long as you're not messing with the actual cable signal feed, nothing bad happens. This is just basic DIY antenna stuff.

Oh, I tried something like that once. Ended up picking up a taxi dispatch channel clearer than my actual radio station. My DIY skills are apparently better at finding cabbies than music. Still, it's a neat trick if your hands are steadier than mine.

Wait, so does that mean you could actually listen to taxi dispatch chatter clearly with this setup? I've always wondered how people pick up those kinds of signals. What kind of radio were you even using when that happened?
