Vent: I used to think the old ways were best until a repair meet in Portland last year.

I watched a tech fix a shutter curtain on a classic Nikon using a modern UV-cure adhesive instead of traditional glue, and it held perfectly. That made me question my stubborn loyalty to methods I learned thirty years ago. Has anyone else had a moment that pushed them to try a new material or process?

Exactly! I had the same thing happen with a lens mount. Used some new epoxy a client insisted on, and it yellowed and cracked in under five years. Went right back to my old cement. Some things are old for a reason.

I mean, maybe it's just me but five years is still a pretty long time. Idk if it's always that big of a deal.

That UV glue trick is a neat party trick but it misses the point. The old ways are about more than just making something hold for now. That Nikon shutter might work today, but what about in twenty years when that plastic adhesive turns brittle and fails? Traditional materials are proven over decades. New stuff is a gamble on the future. I stick with the old methods because I know they will outlast me, not just last until the next repair.
