Hot take: I spent $300 on a 'career coach' who just gave me generic advice I could find online.

I hired her for three sessions after a bad performance review, hoping for a specific action plan to improve my communication with my manager. All I got was a PDF about 'active listening' and told to 'lean in' more, which felt like a total waste. Has anyone actually found a coach who gave them real, tactical steps for their specific situation?

My experience was the opposite, maybe I just got lucky. My coach had me record a fake tough talk with my boss, then we picked apart my tone and word choice. It was awkward but gave me concrete stuff to fix.

Remember my old manager used to make us do role-play for sales calls. Felt so dumb arguing with my coworker pretending to be a mad customer. But @brian_hart is right, you notice weird stuff you do, like saying "um" after every sentence or your voice going up like a question. It did make real talks less scary somehow.

Wow, that sounds intense. Do we really need to rehearse conversations like a play? Seems like overkill to me.
