Question about the 'follow your passion' advice that gets thrown around

I remember hearing that phrase everywhere when I was starting out, like it was the only key to a good job. The thing is, it set me up to feel like a failure when my first few jobs were just okay, not a dream. I've seen a lot of new folks at my bar lately stressing because their work doesn't feel like a 'calling'. What's a better piece of advice you'd give someone just trying to find a decent, stable path?

Got a cousin who followed his passion for medieval history straight into a job at a ren faire turkey leg stand. He says the grease burns are not period accurate.

That advice wrecked my twenties too.
