Got told I was using way too much water on my brushes by an old timer last week
He saw me soaking a 6 inch brush and said "you're just making mud, not cleaning" and showed me how a quick flick and wipe does the same job in half the time. Anyone else have a senior sweep drop some simple wisdom that made you feel like an idiot for years?

Learned that lesson on a roller once. Quick dip, not a soak.

My old man gave me the same lesson on a 4 inch sash brush back in 2008. He grabbed it out of my hand, flicked it twice in the bucket, wiped it on the rim, and said "that's good enough, don't drown it." I used to waste so much time rinsing brushes clean enough to drink from. Now I just do a quick snap and wipe on the side of the can, and the brush lasts twice as long too. Less water actually keeps the bristles from puffing up and losing their shape.

Buddy of mine used to do carpentry with his dad down in Texas. He told me they were painting some fence posts one summer and he was dunking his brush in the bucket like he was washing dishes, water just dripping everywhere. His old man walked over, didn't say a word, just took the brush, gave it one hard snap against the inside of the can, wiped it once on the rim, and handed it back. The paint laid down way smoother and he said it clicked right then. He still jokes about how he used to waste a gallon of water a day just on brush cleaning.
