Overheard a guy at the lumber yard telling his buddy his chimney 'never needs cleaning' because he burns 'good wood'. I had to bite my tongue.

So he thinks "good wood" means no creosote at all? What does he think that black, tarry gunk in his chimney IS, if not from burning wood? Even perfectly seasoned hardwood still makes creosote, it just makes less of it. That buildup is a serious fire hazard waiting to happen.

Wait, he skipped cleaning for three whole years? How is his house not a pile of ash right now?

The guy at the lumber yard is playing with fire, literally. Even the best oak or maple, split and dried for two years, still creates some creosote. It's about the smoke condensing on a cold chimney liner. My neighbor learned this the hard way last winter. His flue caught fire because he skipped a cleaning for three years, thinking his wood was clean enough.
