Showerthought: My neighbor saw my comic collection and made a snap judgment

He thinks all fans are into the same stuff. It gets old having to defend what I enjoy.

Ugh, that's the worst. My friend's coworker saw his fantasy novels and assumed he was obsessed with elves, but he actually prefers crime thrillers.

My old neighbor in the apartment complex did the same thing with my vintage record collection, lol. It's easier to just point to one specific thing you love, like a single comic run, instead of trying to explain the whole hobby. I get what dylanr51 is saying too, people make the weirdest leaps. Most folks just don't get that being into a genre doesn't mean you're into every part of it.

Funny enough, I was totally on Anthony's side for years, always trying to give the full museum tour of my comics or my record shelves. It just made people's eyes glaze over, though. Then my buddy asked about one beat-up Ramones album, and we talked just about that for an hour. Way better than listing every punk band I own. Now I just point to the one thing that's actually out and let the chat go from there, saves everyone the hassle.

Actually, focusing on just one comic run seems like giving up. My shelf has everything from superhero events to quiet indie stories, and that variety matters. Someone might see Spider-Man and assume I only like capes, but then they miss the crime comics or historical stuff. Letting that slide means they keep thinking all fans are the same. A quick chat about the different genres on display can clear things up without much effort.
