Watching folks at the local shop call every superhero movie a 'comic book movie' is starting to bug me.

It matters because it lumps adaptations in with the source material, and I know from collecting for 15 years that the stories are often totally different. How do you politely correct someone when they get the medium wrong?

Okay but is it really that big a deal? Like finley_smith said, people mix up graphic novels and movies too. I get the stories are different, but most folks at the shop just mean they watched the movie version. Correcting them seems like overkill unless they're actually trying to talk about the comic plot.

Honestly, does it really change anything they're saying? It just seems like a quick way to sound like a know-it-all.

My buddy who works at a comic shop says the real confusion starts when people call the movies "graphic novels." That's a whole other can of worms.
