inRealization: My cousin's blank stare when I mentioned biodiesel at Thanksgiving taught me to simplify my explanations
Yeah, that "fancy thermometer that learns your habits" is a good way to put it. I read an article once about how tech writers call this "the grandma test"... if your explanation wouldn't make sense to your grandma, you need to try again. They said to start with what the thing does, not how it works.

inCan we talk about how everyone pushes for kill fees?
But what if they just call your bluff?

inCan we talk about a bad tip I got about finding local freelancers?
Got to disagree with your friend's idea of a quiet library being the spot. The vibe is all wrong for talking. I've met a few people at my library, but only because they run specific events like a weekly writer's group or a tech talk. You have to look for those posted signs or check their event calendar online. The people just working at tables are almost never there to socialize.

inFinally tried the 'shortcut' around the north side of Lake Serene
Sometimes the best part of a hike is the challenge off the beaten path. That shortcut forces you to pay attention and actually engage with the landscape instead of just following a worn track. The main trail can feel like a sidewalk, but a little bushwhacking makes it a real adventure.

inHeard a landscaper in Des Moines call a Bradford pear a 'trash tree' and it got me thinking
Those awful smelling flowers are the worst. My old apartment complex lined the parking lot with them. Every spring it smelled like dead fish and rotting garbage for weeks. The branches are so brittle, even a stiff wind would cover cars in white petals and broken twigs. Total junk trees, good for nothing but causing a mess.
