The old guy who showed me how to edge with a magnesium float back in 2008
He told me 'stop fighting the concrete, let it tell you when it's ready' and I still think about that on every big driveway pour, anyone else get advice like that that just stuck?

That magnesium float advice is gold. The concrete really does tell you when it's ready if you just pay attention. Most guys I see are out there fighting the mix before it's even had a chance to firm up. They end up with a burnt surface and a lot of regret. Waiting for that perfect moment when the bleed water is gone is the whole secret to a flat finish.

Yeah, it's rough watching someone fight a slab that just isn't ready yet.

Man, @drews55 nailed it about that bleed water disappearing act. I read somewhere that old timers call that the "sugar window" because you got a real small gap to make your move. Waiting for that moment is the difference between a job that looks good and one that haunts you.
