Borrowed a laser level from a framer in Denver and learned why I was off by a quarter inch
I was doing a closet shelf job and my bubble level just wasn't cutting it. This older framer named Dave let me use his rotary laser for ten minutes. He showed me how the self leveling feature catches errors you can't see by eye. Got the whole thing square in half the time. Have you guys ever tried a good laser level for simple shelving or is that overkill?

@zarat37 nailed it about the self leveling. I did the same thing on a kitchen shelf job, thought I was fine until I checked with a friend's laser and I was off by almost the same amount. Just let it sit for a few seconds like they said, it catches those tiny floor or ceiling dips you can't even feel but throw everything off.

Tbh Dave set you up right. I used to fight with bubble levels on shelf brackets and it drove me nuts because the floor or ceiling is never actually level. A rotary laser like that catches the tiny dips you can't feel but throw your line off by a quarter inch over just a few feet. For simple shelving it might feel like overkill but honestly once you use one you won't want to go back to squinting at a bubble. Just make sure to let the laser self level for a few seconds before you mark your spots. It saves so much time compared to measuring and remeasuring.
