Old guy at the hardware store showed me a trick for fixing stripped screw holes
He said grab a couple toothpicks and some wood glue, jam em in the hole, snap em off, and screw right back in. Saved me from redrilling a cabinet hinge I messed up last Tuesday. Anyone else got a weird fix that actually works better than the proper way?

Hate to be the guy pushing back, but that toothpick trick is a bandaid at best. I've seen too many people do that and the hinge gets loose again in a month because the glue dries out or the toothpicks just crumble inside the hole. If you're already at the hardware store, spend three bucks on a proper wood plug or a pack of bigger screws. The right way is stronger and you won't have to mess with it again. Every time I've tried shortcuts like that on cabinet hinges or drawer pulls, I end up doing it the real way a few months later anyway. You're better off just redrilling and using a dowel.

Are you sure that's always the case though? I've fixed plenty of hinges with toothpicks and wood glue and they've held up fine for years, even in high-traffic areas like kitchen cabinets. It's all about how well you prep the hole (you gotta clean out the old glue and dust first) and let the glue cure overnight before you put the screw back in.

You ever try the trick where you just use a slightly bigger screw and call it a day? I've got a couple hinges in my shop that have been holding fine for years with that approach, no glue or toothpicks needed.
