TIL that cheap joint compound from the big box store can ruin a whole job
I grabbed a bucket of the store brand stuff for a basement finish in Spokane last month. After the first coat, it dried with a weird, gritty texture that wouldn't sand out smooth. I had to scrape it all off and start over with a name brand mud, which cost me a full day. Has anyone else had this happen with a specific brand, and what's your go-to mud now?

That gritty texture sounds like a total nightmare to deal with. I can't believe it wouldn't even sand out properly. You just saved me from making the same mistake.

Seen this same thing with all kinds of products. The cheap version looks fine on the shelf but never works right. It's a false economy that costs you more time and money in the end. You pay for the fix and the redo. Happens with paint, tools, even light bulbs. The job always tells on you.

Oh man, "wouldn't even sand out properly" is the worst. I once tried to save a few bucks on mud for a patch job at my own house and ended up with a finish that looked like I applied it with a broom. My wife called it a "rustic accent wall." I was the only one laughing.
