Realized I've been over-torquing the governor rope clamp for a decade after a new guy asked why the strands looked crushed.

It finally clicked when he showed me the spec sheet from a 2012 Otis manual that said 25 ft-lbs, not 'as tight as you can get it' like my old foreman taught me, so how do you all handle retraining muscle memory on stuff like that?

Man, that's a classic story right there. It's wild how one wrong piece of advice can stick for ten years. For muscle memory, I just have to force myself to slow down and use the torque wrench every single time, no shortcuts. It feels wrong for a while, like you're not doing the job right. But after a few weeks of being strict about it, the new way starts to feel normal. Breaking that old habit is a pain but totally worth it.

Honestly, that old foreman's method gets the clamp on solid every time. Spec sheets are just suggestions.

I used to agree with you, but evan_grant70's point about forcing the new habit really changed my mind.
