Had a client tell me my invoices were too vague and it changed how I bill.

She said she had no idea what she was paying for after 3 months of working together. I switched to line-item breakdowns with time estimates and it cut my payment disputes by half - anyone else deal with clients confused by your billing?

Wait, isn't it better to just send one number and trust the client? I used to think keeping it minimal was cleaner, but I switched after a client accused me of padding hours. Now I list every meeting and task, and it's cut the awkward questions way down.

That's really interesting. I read somewhere that a lot of freelancers just send a total number without breaking it down, and it makes clients nervous. Your story proves it. I had a similar issue a few years back with a client who questioned every invoice. Once I started listing each task and how long it took, all the confusion went away. It also makes you look more professional, like you have nothing to hide.

I break it down so much it looks like a novel. Clients probably think I'm lying about how long I stare at walls.
