I was at the library in Portland and saw a local business owner struggling with their website.
They were trying to update their own site's content and were completely lost on how to make it show up in searches. I ended up helping them for about twenty minutes, explaining basic on-page stuff like title tags and headings. It made me think about how many small businesses need simple SEO help but don't know where to start. Has anyone else found good ways to explain these basics to new clients?

Man, I always start with "what do you want to be found for?

Honestly that question feels backwards to me. Starting with what you want to be found for puts the cart before the horse. Most people don't even know what that is yet. Tbh it's better to just look at what you're already doing and what people might actually search for. Ngl, beginning with some perfect keyword target can make you sound fake or miss the point. You gotta work with what's real first.

Yeah, starting with "what do you want to be found for" is a solid move. It forces you to pick a lane before you even write. Like if you're a baker, you decide if you want people finding you for "sourdough tips" or "wedding cakes" first. Then you build your posts around those terms. Otherwise you're just making random content that goes nowhere.
