Spent $150 on a keyword research tool and it gave me the same data as Google's free planner

That promised "AI-driven insights" were just repackaged suggestions I could have pulled from the free version in 10 minutes, so is anyone else just sticking with basic tools and saving the cash?

Ahrefs free tools already give you 80% of what most people need.

Is the backlinks data really that useful for most people?

MAN oh man did I learn this the hard way! I blew $200 on some tool that promised "game changing" data and it was literally just surfacing the same search volume ranges Google gives you for free. What actually worked for me was combining Google's planner with the "People Also Ask" section on SERPs to find long tail keywords without spending a dime. Also started using Ubersuggest's free version just to check if a keyword has decent search volume before putting time into it. The trick is spending your time, not your money, everything you really need is sitting right there in Google Search Console and Analytics if you actually dig through it.
