My smart lock decided to reboot itself while I was locked out with my groceries

Last Tuesday in Phoenix, I was coming back from the store with two bags of food when the keypad just went blank and the lock made this weird clicking sound. I had to call the landlord to let me in while my ice cream melted on the porch. Has anyone else had a smart home gadget totally fail at the worst possible time?

That reboot was probably the lock doing a firmware update, not just a random crash. My August lock did the same thing last month, and the app log showed it installed an update right when it went offline. You might want to check your lock's activity history in its app.

Ugh, that's the worst! @shane_carter is probably right about the update. My smart thermostat did the exact same thing during a heatwave last summer, just decided to restart and left my place cooking for an hour. Felt like I was living in an oven.

Seriously, can we get a "no updates while holding groceries" mode? My smart bulb once decided to reset itself right as I was trying to show it off to my parents, leaving us all in the dark. These things have a real talent for picking the worst moments.
