TIL my renters insurance covers gear when I work from a camper
Last month I moved into a 2009 Sprinter van to save money while doing freelance web work on the road. I figured my stuff was basically uninsured out there, so I almost skipped getting a policy. Called my agent in Boise and found out my renters insurance actually extends to personal property in a vehicle, up to 10% of my coverage limit. That's $2,500 for my laptop and camera, which blew my mind since I assumed I'd need a separate RV policy. Has anyone else tested this with a travel trailer or converted bus, or did your insurer have fine print that screwed you over?

Read every single line of your policy before you bank on that. I got burned once when my tools got lifted out of my work truck, thought I was covered, but the fine print said no tools used for business. Cameras and laptops for freelance work can easily trigger the same exclusion. So call your agent and ask straight up if your gear is covered when it's used to make money. That 10% thing sounds nice till you're staring at a $3,000 replacement bill.

@kim_davis is right about exclusions, but the 10% rule usually counts gear separately from tools. Still call your agent to be sure.
