Heard a guy at the coffee shop say 'I just write off my whole Amazon cart' and I froze
I was sitting there trying to figure out if my new camera lens counts as a business expense for my freelance video work, and this guy two tables over is bragging about deducting a kayak. I know the rules are loose but come on, that's just asking for an audit. Has anyone actually gotten away with something wild like that?

Freelancers can't write off cameras unless it's used solely for business.

Solely for business" is a bit too strict. Tax law actually lets you deduct stuff used partly for business too, just have to split it based on how much you use it for work.

Nah I think the rules are looser than people say with the right paper trail.

Heard that and it hit me hard because my buddy tried writing off a paddleboard as "water-based client transport." IRS shut that down fast with a nasty letter and he still jokes about it at every cookout. Guess some people just enjoy living dangerously with their tax returns.
