VPN that looked shady but saved my ass
I was super skeptical about using a VPN for years. Thought it was just for pirates and weirdos. Then my coffee shop WiFi got hit with a spoofing attack last month. Someone tried to grab my login info through a fake login page. Now I run one every time I work remote and I feel stupid for waiting.

Big name VPNs are just more ad money, not better service...

Oh man, good for you catching that. I think the part people don't talk about enough is how VPNs can actually mess with your connection when you need it most. I had one that was supposedly top rated but it kept throttling my speed during video calls, made my voice sound like a robot. Switched to a less popular one and it's been smooth sailing ever since. Your mileage may vary but sometimes the big names aren't all they're cracked up to be for real world use.
