TIL manual file backup was faster than my cloud sync gone wrong

I used to rely completely on Dropbox for all my design files until two years ago when it failed to sync a folder I was actively working in. Lost three hours of edits on a client logo because the offline version saved over the newer one. Now I manually drag copies to an external SSD every Friday afternoon around 4pm. It takes maybe 10 minutes but I haven't lost a single file since. Isn't it funny how adding a simple step like that can save you from pulling your hair out later? Anyone else have a backup routine that feels old school but works better for them?

Why does nobody talk about how $50 smart plugs can nuke your WiFi?

Bought a 4 pack of cheap smart plugs for my home office lights last week, cost me $50 total. The moment I plugged them in my router started dropping signal like crazy, had to reset it 3 times before I figured out the plugs were the problem. Took 2 hours of troubleshooting and a factory reset to get my internet back stable. Has anyone else had cheap IoT gear destroy their network like this?

Overheard a guy at Starbucks ranting about cloud storage and it got me thinking

I was waiting for my coffee and this dude was telling his friend he pays $120 a year for extra iCloud storage but doesn't even use half of it. Meanwhile I'm over here with a $5 external hard drive I got 3 years ago that holds everything I need. Am I missing something or are cloud subscriptions just a tax on people who don't want to plug in a cable?

Just found out my old laptop from 2012 has more raw processing power than the Apollo guidance computer

I was reading this article about the Apollo 11 mission on Ars Technica and it said the guidance computer only had about 64KB of memory. My first real laptop had 4GB of RAM... that's like 60,000 times more. Kinda wild how far we've come in just 50 years, right? Anyone else ever stop and think about that?

The coffee shop that taught me to reset my router on a schedule

I was at this little spot called Brew & Byte in Austin last week, stuck on a video call that kept freezing. The barista mentioned they reboot their wifi router every morning at 7 AM sharp to avoid drop-offs during the rush. I tried it at home the next day and my connection has been way more stable since. Been doing it for about 10 days now, and my laggy calls dropped from like 3 a day to maybe 1 a week. You ever try scheduling router resets or is that just a coffee shop hack?

Debate: Does a fast internet connection really matter for coding or is it overhyped?

I was talking with my buddy Dave last week, he's a developer too, and he swears anything under 500 Mbps is unworkable. But I've been on a 100 Mbps plan for 3 years and never noticed a slowdown except when downloading huge files. He said loading documentation pages and npm installs get way faster with higher speeds, but I feel like most of my time is spent in an editor or waiting on builds, not the internet. Now I'm second guessing my setup though. Has anyone else switched to a faster plan and actually felt a real difference in daily work, or is it just a flex?

Rant: People keep calling every flash drive a 'hard drive'

Was helping my aunt move files from her old laptop last weekend and she kept asking about the 'hard drive' in her USB port. I see this all the time at my local library's tech help desk too. A flash drive stores data on a chip, a hard drive uses spinning metal disks inside. They are not the same thing and it matters because if you drop a flash drive it's fine, but drop your actual hard drive while it's running and you could lose everything. I work in IT repair and I've seen three people this month alone accidentally unplug their external hard drive while it was still reading and corrupt their whole backup. Does anyone else run into this confusion at family gatherings or is it just my relatives?

Spent 4 hours trying to fix a simple print spooler issue last night

I was trying to print out a shipping label for a return and my printer just sat there doing nothing. Figured it was a driver thing so I reinstalled those, no luck. Then I spent a good hour messing with the spooler settings in services.msc, restarting it like 5 times. Finally found a random forum post from 2017 that said to delete the temp files in the spool folder. Took maybe 30 seconds after that and it worked perfectly. Four hours for something that ended up being a quick file cleanup. Has anyone else had a tech problem that turned out to be way simpler than you made it?

VPN that looked shady but saved my ass

I was super skeptical about using a VPN for years. Thought it was just for pirates and weirdos. Then my coffee shop WiFi got hit with a spoofing attack last month. Someone tried to grab my login info through a fake login page. Now I run one every time I work remote and I feel stupid for waiting.

Just hit 10,000 lines of code on my first real project and I'm shook

I've been teaching myself Python for about 6 months now, mostly messing around with small scripts and tutorials. But I decided to build this little app that helps me sort out my monthly bills and track spending. I use it every day now, tweaking stuff here and there. Yesterday I checked the line count and it was over 10,000 lines. That number blew my mind because I never thought I'd write that much stuff that actually works. It's not perfect or pretty code, but it does what I need and I understand every part of it. Has anyone else hit a random milestone like this with a personal project that just happened without planning?

Hot take: Windows 11 isn't the upgrade everyone says it is.

I ran Windows 10 side by side with 11 on two identical laptops for 3 weeks and 10 booted faster, crashed less, and didn't hide basic settings behind 4 extra clicks, has anyone else gone back to 10 after trying 11?

Just compared rolling my own AI model vs using ChatGPT for data cleanup and it was no contest after 18 hours of fiddling

I spent a full weekend setting up a local LLM to scrub a client's messy CSV files, then ran the same task through ChatGPT in 5 minutes and got way cleaner results, so am I just wasting time trying to do it myself or is there a real advantage to going local for privacy?

Had to choose between a refurbished laptop and a new Chromebook for remote work...

I went with the refurbished ThinkPad for $350 instead of a $250 Chromebook because I needed proper Windows apps. It showed up with a loose hinge and dead pixel on day three, now I'm second guessing if I should have just gotten the simpler option. Has anyone else gambled on refurbished gear and regretted it?

Question about those new mesh Wi-Fi routers at the airport lounge

I was stuck at the Denver airport last Friday for a 3 hour layover and decided to camp out in the lounge. I noticed they just installed these new mesh Wi-Fi nodes every 20 feet along the hallway. My connection stayed rock solid even when I walked all the way to the far snack bar, which never happened before with the old setup. Anyone else seen these mesh systems popping up in busy public spaces and noticed a difference?
