Wait you used to actually use hot water for everything? That's wild to me... my mom drilled it into my head that hot water ruins clothes and makes colors fade like crazy. I've only ever used cold unless something was really gross. I guess I just assumed everyone knew that. You must have been going through so much detergent and energy for no reason.
