I got called out for only talking about mainstream shonen in our anime club

A girl in my club said 'you're missing the whole point of discussing anime if you just stick to the same five popular shows' after I kept bringing up Naruto and My Hero Academia. I started watching one older series she recommended, Serial Experiments Lain, and it totally changed what I look for in a story. What's a show that made you rethink how you talk about anime?

What was the show that got you like that? For me it was Haibane Renmei... made me realize how much quiet, weird stuff is out there.

Oh man, Haibane Renmei is such a good pick for that feeling. That show sits with you for days after you finish it. It really opened my eyes to how powerful a slow, quiet story can be. Makes you want to hunt down more stuff that leaves you thinking instead of just entertained.

Paranoia Agent did that for me. It's a short series but every episode feels like its own weird little puzzle. @emma_jones Haibane Renmei sounds like it's in that same quiet, thoughtful zone. Shows like that make you look for the meaning under the surface instead of just the action.
