Turns out, my mulch choice affects local bug populations more than I thought
Had no idea certain mulches can harm beneficial insects in the garden.

Yeah, that rubber mulch stuff is basically a dead zone for anything useful. The dyed wood chips can be bad too, leaching who knows what into the soil. It's wild how something sold for gardens can wreck the little ecosystem you're trying to help. Always check the bag for anything that says it repels insects, because it's not picky about which ones it kills.

This is such a common thing now. Like those antibacterial sprays that kill all germs, good and bad, and mess up your immune system. Or how roundup was supposed to save time but wrecked soil health for years. Even air fresheners that just cover up smells with chemicals. Feels like we're sold a fix that just makes more work later. Marketing never mentions the side effects until it's too late.

Read an article about those "weed barrier" fabrics. They stop water and air from getting through, basically suffocating the soil underneath. So you end up with dead dirt and more problems than you started with.

My backyard veggie patch looked so sad last year I figured some of that cedar mulch would help. Turns out I basically built a tiny bug jail that kept out all the good guys too. So I was out there hand-pollinating my zucchini like a chump. Felt pretty smart trying to fix a problem I totally made myself.
