My brother said to always preheat my ceramic mug with hot water before pouring coffee

He swore it was the only way to keep the coffee hot longer. I thought it was a waste of water and time, so I ignored him for months. Finally tried it last week with my morning brew, and the coffee stayed noticeably warmer for a solid 15 minutes longer. I feel like an idiot for not listening sooner. Does this actually make a big difference, or is it just a placebo thing?

Warning: My sourdough starter went nuclear during a heatwave last July.

I left it on the counter in my kitchen in Austin, and it overflowed its jar overnight, covering my entire counter in a sticky, smelly mess. I had to scrape it all up and start over from scratch with a tiny bit saved from the fridge. Has anyone else had a starter go crazy like that in hot weather?

I've been using the same old mixing ratio for clear coat for 8 years, but a run on a black Honda Civic last week made me grab the tech sheet.

The sheet said 4:1:1, not the 4:1 I'd been doing, and adding that extra part of reducer was the difference between a perfect flow and a sag every time.

Just switched from a standard utility knife to a hook blade for cutting carpet pad

The hook blade made a cleaner, faster cut on a 1,500 sq ft job in Tacoma and my wrist didn't ache after. Anyone else find a specific tool that made a huge difference in your daily work?

How a story stick fixed my wobbly bookcase

I was building a simple bookcase and the shelves kept coming out uneven. My neighbor, who's a cabinetmaker, told me to use a story stick for marking all the shelf dados at once. I took a straight piece of scrap, marked each shelf position on it, and then used it to guide my cuts. Now every shelf fits perfectly without any guesswork.

Honestly, I was sure my old hammer handle was fine until it snapped mid-strike.

I used to think replacing it was a hassle, but a properly fitted hickory handle changed how I control every hit. Tbh, it's made my forging days way smoother and safer.

PSA: My bottom bracket fix after thinking I'd mess it up

Bottom brackets used to freak me out, all those parts and special tools. Had this old road bike in the shop with a stuck crank, so I had to go for it. Took everything apart slowly, cleaned out years of gunk from the frame. Putting in the new cartridge felt good, like it actually fit right. When I tightened it all and the crank spun smooth, I was so pumped. It's a basic job for some, but for me it was a big confidence boost. Now I'm less scared to open up other tricky areas on bikes. Just had to tell people who know what this feels like.

Clean plaster wall job done, but signal keeps breaking up

Just finished an install in an old brick building. Proud I didn't crack any plaster running the lines. Now the customer's TV picture gets fuzzy every few minutes. Think it might be interference from the existing wiring?
