The chef at a party thought bricklayers and pastry chefs use the same tools.
I was at a cookout and a chef asked if my trowel was for icing. I explained the difference between mortar and frosting. He tried to use my margin trowel on a cake, and it was a funny mess. We compared notes on precision work.

Used to think all trowels were basically the same. Watching a mason friend work showed me the specific angle and flex needed for mortar versus frosting. Changed my whole view on specialized tools.

But sometimes all that gear just feels like extra stuff to buy and store. A good worker can make do with basic tools if they know what they're doing.

My marble rolling pin showed me the same thing. It stays cold for pastry dough when my old wooden one would warm up and stick. Totally changed how I handle pie crust now.

Kinda reminds me of when I finally got a good paint scraper with a real handle. Idk, maybe it's just me but my old putty knife made everything so much harder. The right tool just flips a switch in your head about how to even approach the work, total game changer.
