Debate: Should you use a VPN on public wifi or not?

I always thought using a VPN at coffee shops was a no-brainer, but after testing 3 different ones at a Starbucks in Austin, my connection got 5 times slower and one site flagged me as a bot. Some guys online say free wifi is fine if you stick to HTTPS sites only. What's your take on this whole VPN or no VPN thing for public networks?

Wait @mason_murray8, people really don't know what HTTPS is?

Totally get where you're coming from, the slowdown is real. I tried a VPN at a Starbucks in Denver once and it was so laggy I couldn't even load a basic page. Honestly, I think HTTPS is good enough for most people just checking email or browsing news. VPNs can be a pain if you don't really need one, and the free ones are usually sketchy anyway.

Do you think most people even KNOW what HTTPS is though? I feel like your average person just sees a little lock icon and assumes everything is safe, then wonders why their info gets stolen at a coffee shop.
