I spent $90 on a coding bootcamp video that was just a guy reading a free tutorial

Last month I was stuck on JavaScript loops and bought a 'complete guide' video course for ninety bucks. The guy basically just read out loud from the MDN web docs, which are totally free online. I watched the whole three hour thing hoping for some secret tips, but it was just the same basic examples. I felt so dumb for not checking the free stuff first. Now I always look for official docs or free tutorials before I pay for anything. Has anyone else bought a course that was just a rehash of free information? What sites do you trust for real beginner help?

Tried to grow a lemon tree from a grocery store seed and it actually worked

I mean, I just stuck a seed from a regular lemon in a pot last fall, not expecting much. Kept it by a south facing window in my kitchen and watered it maybe once a week. It sprouted after like three weeks and now it's a little plant, maybe 8 inches tall. Has anyone else had luck with this, or am I just getting lucky?

Spent a whole shift chasing a weird finish on a 4140 part

I was running a simple facing op on a lathe, and the finish looked like garbage, all torn and fuzzy. Checked the insert, speeds, feeds, everything. Finally, after like five hours, I noticed the coolant mix was way too weak. Topped it up with concentrate and the next part came out smooth as glass. How do you guys keep your coolant concentration right without a refractometer?

Vent: My local polling place had a line that moved way too fast last Tuesday.

I went to vote in the city primary, and the whole process took maybe 90 seconds from walking in to getting my sticker. There was no ID check, just a quick signature match against a printed list. Has anyone else seen voting happen with almost no real verification lately?

Tried two different contract templates for a client in Portland

I used a free one I found online for a web design job, and then a paid template from a site called ContractCafe for a similar job after. The free one was missing a clear part about who owns the final files, which caused a big fight with the first client. The paid one had a full section on rights and saved me so much trouble, it was worth the $45. Has anyone else found a good template site they like for this stuff?

Talked to a friend who moved to Lisbon and his tax story made me pause

He said he didn't check the double taxation treaty between his home country and Portugal before he went. He ended up paying income tax in both places for his first six months there. The extra bill was about 8,000 euros. I was just looking at flights, but now I'm reading every treaty I can find. Has anyone else gotten tripped up by tax rules after moving?

Unpopular opinion: The new season of that show everyone loves is actually way worse than the first one

I just finished the latest season of 'Midnight Echoes' and I'm honestly confused by all the praise. The first season was so tight, with just eight episodes that all felt important. This new one has twelve episodes and you can really feel the padding... entire subplots go nowhere, like that whole thing with the sister's art gallery that took up two episodes. The main character's choices stopped making sense around episode five, just to create more drama. It went from a smart mystery to a soap opera with ghosts. I binged the first season in two days but this one took me over a week because I kept getting bored. Has anyone else felt let down by a show's second season like this?

I was reading a book about sales, and a line said 'people buy from people, not templates.' It made me look at my own follow-up email. I realized it was super generic, just asking 'any updates?' I changed it to mention one specific thing from our first talk, like 'I was thinking about your goal to increase sign-ups.' Since I started doing that two weeks ago, my reply rate went from zero to about half. Has anyone else found that adding one personal detail makes a big difference?

Had a total site grid failure at the Bronze Age settlement dig in County Kerry last month. The rain turned our perfectly marked squares into a mud soup.

We were three days into excavating a potential hearth feature when a storm rolled in overnight. Came back to find half our string lines sagging or washed away, and the section drawings were soaked. My supervisor just said 'start over, it's archaeology.' Took two of us a full day to re-establish the grid with new pins and a laser level. Anyone else had a survey just get completely wrecked by weather?
